Trane web-site says the XR 14 can reach up to 16 SEER and a certain EER, depending on indoor selection. The XR-16 says it can reach up to 17 SEER and a certain EER depending on indoor selection. You can’t go by the rating of the outdoor unit alone.

Talked to the our Hvac Pro, he mentioned the 16 has a little bit more coil. I'm primarily interested in the compressors though. Lg vs Climatuff. I think most xr14s now come with LG and the 16s are Climatuff right?

To clarify, "Climatuff" is a marketing term Trane uses for all compressors in their units. They no longer use the original "Climatuff" reciprocating compressor of their own design and build (that made them famous) in any unit. The two vendors they use for scroll compressors are either Alliance (which is a joint venture between Trane and Copeland) or LG. The Alliance scrolls are built in a different factory from the Copeland scrolls and maybe have some small changes in design, but I understand they are largely the same as the Copeland scroll.

Main difference between the 14 and 16 is coil size. Compressor brand depends on unit tonnage. Right now the 2 and 5 tons are coming with LG, while the 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 tons are coming with Alliance, for both XR14 and XR16. I'm not sure which compressor the 1.5 ton units are getting, the parts list doesn't specify.

Depends on size. We had a noisy Alliance in a XR13 2 ton and the tech rep said LGs are quieter (not sure he's right) and he'd send us a 2 ton LG from the 16 SEER.

I don't think they use the Climatuff name any more. The Alliance say that on them and if it is a LG, they say Trane. Go figure. If I were Trane I wouldn't claim them :D

On the XR14 1.5 ton, it's an Alliance.

I did it says 14 Seer, we have an S9x95 furnace? High efficiency constant torque motor no mention on coil. He said it would get up to 16 seer...
Read your last sentence closely, it says “up to” 16 SEER does not say a AHRI rated 16 SEER system. Not only needing complete model number and brand of indoor coil ( as it’s not unusual to use a 3rd party coil manufacturers such as ADP or Aspen ) but would need the complete accurate model number of the OD unit and Furnace number, as width of coil, and furnace width and BTU of furnaces shows the different AHRI numbers. Could also be a unmatched system ( just the coil is matched to the outdoor unit as an example ) and not matched to the furnace. Does not mean system won’t work, just means your guessing at your SEER and EER. Now if rebates or the Federal Tax Credits come into play, then you would need a AHRI matched system on the A/C side as you need a AHRI number to enter when you/Contractors file for rebates. The furnace can qualify on its own for rebates and the Tax Credits, thinking 95% is the minimum threshold for rebates and the Federal Tax Credits.

One source for rebates: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...gaApcQFnoECAYQAw&url=https://www.dsireusa.org/&usg=AOvVaw19WUxQBTiQc0GVu13UMfK_

Ask the Contractor or check with your local utility company or gas company for rebates.

You got the complete numbers? Can check what those two systems are on paper ( not real world numbers thou ) but give you a idea what the ratings are. Also ask the Contractor for the number to prove your getting a rating they tell you. The “up to” 16 SEER is there way out of giving you a system that’s rated that high.

What does that mean? Your furnace is a older furnace? If so chances it will be harder to get 16 SEER from the XR16 with a older existing furnace. As you mentioned maybe 15 SEER tops? If so you may just want to go with the XR14 and save some money as you probably can get the same SEER rating.

“This the furnace they just installed.”

They just installed a furnace ( that looks like a unknown model number you supplied ) but you haven’t decided what Air Conditioning to install yet? Why wouldn’t they install everything at the same time?

Get correct model and serial number and brand ( usually located on the inside panel of the furnace itself ) if you want to know the particulars and age of the furnace.

S9x1b060U4PSBAB furnace
4MXCB004AC6HCAA coil. Its not touching 16 SEER.
With an Xr14 unit 3 ton.
Yep, as you said the XR14 3 ton only gets 14 SEER with that coil and furnace. The 4MXC series is the Midea-built (Ameristar) coil, if you step up to the Trane-built coil (4TXC) you could get up to 15 SEER with that condenser and furnace. Going to a 3rd party Aspen coil could get you up to 15.5 SEER with that furnace. To get 16 SEER out of the XR14 3 ton condenser, you'd need the S9V2 (variable speed) furnace with Aspen coil.

Here is your AHRI number for the furnace # 203862598 ( if homework was done correctly ) chances you’ll need to enter that number on any web-site forms when you apply for your state rebate ( money in your pocket ) as typically rebates start at 95%> says output is 58K BTU.

Make sure each piece gets registered, as manufacturers warranty decreases if system is never registered.
