I’ve been experimenting with using a grappling hook to get things up and down a roof. Obviously there are other options like a gofer. But so far this has been a great addition so I just figured I’d share it.

My longterm term goal is to work my way up to master ninja tech then I can repel down the sides of buildings (in an OSHA approved way of course)

Or better yet, use it for climbing up the side of the building when some kids shoved bubble gum into the mechanical room lock.
The lock thing happened to me yesterday.
You could also use it to snag the college kid that did that. Soy boys don’t weigh much these days, they’d be easy to reel in. You could bait the hook with a picture of fortnite or something from starbucks

I was thinking it might be handy to clobber the guy trying to steal tools from your truck when you see them from the roof.

It was around $30, may be cheaper on ebay. I put a link to the one I bought in the video description, but there were quite a few amazon vendors selling the same thing...some may be cheaper than others.

@JayMan7 is it alright if I call you Technician Hook from now on?

What's the material ?
Well the body is every so slightly magnetic so that’s stainless. The claws are very magnetic so I’m guessing steel (could be a magnetic alloy of stainless but I doubt it).

Hahahaha yeah we could go with cap’n tech hook hahaha...lord I think I need more of a life outside of hvac...I’m turning into too much of a nerd haha.

Thats pretty cheap. Looks to be decently built though.

Have you tried to lower a vacuum pump or recovery machine with it yet? Wondering how easy it is to 'unhook' those.

Yeah I was kinda surprised when I got it. It’s built like a tank. I’ll be lowering pump and recovery today so I’ll let you know how it goes!

I like it although I rarely even use a rope. Now on occasions I'll work with another tradesman and find they'll pull up everything but the kitchen sink.:eek2:
As a comparison I go up with a six in one and maybe a meter.
assess the situation then go get what I need. I do get plenty of exercise but I'm okay with that.
That hook would be nice for recovery & vacuuming hosting vs the one arm ladder climb. 👍🏻

I think its an osha thing. I just try to park where I'm outside of the street and look over my shoulder real quick before I do the one or no-handed climb up the ladder with an arm load of tools. If OSHA comes I've got a rope as a backup story. Working in bad neighborhoods it makes me nervous leaving a rope hanging around I don't want to find somebody hung on my rope.

I used a hook though not as nice as that one and it worked well. I ended up switching to longer ropes with caribiners attached at different lengths so I could do something like 4 loads on the same rope. That hook is much cooler though. I think it's on sale at Amazon right now.
