HI all. Im a plumber 32 years. I have knowledge of HVAC but am no pro.

I hope this is the right forum to post my questions.

Im having a home built in myrtle beach SC. Actually a few towns over. Galivants ferry, The builder usually puts in single stage unit heat pumps with a 2.5 ton condenser.

Since Im in the field per se' and know about comfort levels, such as in mod con boilers, I have asked for a two stage unit be installed. I paid an up charge of $ bucks.

The unit is a temp star as thats what they install down here. Im fine with that. What I am not fine with is I got a glimpse of the air handler. The handler is a FVM4X2400BL and his dictates a handler for a 2 ton condenser.

I just found this out today and I am a bit concerned.

Since 2 stage units do not come in 1/2 tonnages they went smaller for what ever reason. Lack of education? Trying to make a bigger profit off me?

Idk, but IMO this will defeat the prurpose of a 2 stage system as it will most likely run on hi stage to cool the home. I mean SC get hot and has hi humidity here.

My son in law did a rough manual J and it would seem I need at least 2.5 ton. Depending on how you fudge it we still got 2.3 tons with bare minimums.

Will this 2 stage perform miracles at 2 tons? Possibly this is how they do it down here?

I have a call into the builder to see if and how they came to this # of 2 tons. I asked for their manual J but they may not use it down here. It may just be lack of education on two stage systems. Maybe no body asks for them here. Im a northerner and know how things work.

I would think as I said the unit running on low would use 1.2 tons on low to try to cool and would struggle, and I assume just run on hi all the time in summer. Defeating the purpose of the 2 stage I spent good money on..

To fix it , if they even do, would require the fvm4x3600 installed with a 3 ton compressor. Then I think I will benefit of 2 stage.

The duct I believe is 14" but I will need to measure later this week.

Any guidance is appreciated

I like the variable-speed air handler. That's a must. I agree with you, if they thought a 2.5 ton HP was need, you should go with a 2-stage (3 ton) HP.

A Manual J will say for sure.

What is the 14" pipe all about that you mentioned at the end?

the supply trunk is 14" I think. If its 12" maybe a duct issue if they upsize? CFM between both handlers on hi is 1200 2 ton vs 1400 3 ton

You should get an independent contractor to inspect the #'s and job site!

Only one chance of getting it right

The variable-speed air handler might handle a 2.5 HP......I'm not familiar with TempStar equipment. What does the Manual J say the equipment should be?
