Have a couple questions for you all...

Was at a friends house recently for other reasons and gave the new hvac quick look. Got into a conversation about the time that was spent and what was done (and very likely not done) by the company that installed it.

I try to get into installation side work as little as possible so Im not concerned that I wasn't asked to do it. However, cooling was bumped up 1 ton and no surveying was done to ventilation. Also unclear whether a load calculation was actually done. Variable blower but I am hesitant to check statics and affect the company's warranty. As it stands no hole or plug in the air handler or ducts.

I told them to contact the company regarding a documented load calc and any prior quotes for ventilation modification.

First, am I right to be dumping a company like this? I dont know whether or not any of these things were checked beforehand or afterwards I only doubt it. But I have a feeling that when these questions are asked to the company they could get a defensive response.

Second, based on what you have seen are variable blowers on residential equipment being used as a drop in because they will move the air volume needed even with undersized ducts? Albeit at higher power usage.

Thanks in advance.

I don’t do residential or install ,but what was promised or agreed upon at your friends house? Did you notice short cycling or a problem? If it’s what was ordered and agreed upon what do expect the outcome to be? The time for all of these questions was before the install if your friend didn’t ask your opinion before why put in your :.02: now. As for the static pressure I don’t see how checking tesp would void warranty as long as no adjustments are made consider it a commissioning by an outside agency. Not to be a d**k because we all look at installs on vacation, buying groceries, or driving down the street. If something was quoted by all means have your friend get in their butt and have it fixed but anything else would be buyers remorse imho

Just a comment on your question about blower VS motors. Personal opinion, no substantiating stats. Most companies sell VS motor because they can get more money from the job. Some use it as a crutch to overcome bad duct but I don't see that as very many. A few like me like them because they can provide a lot of good features including longevity and efficiency as well as quiet operation.

Thanks for the input. In that case I tend to think this was part of there plan but dont know for sure. Also a fan of variable but dont do much residential.

Understood. It was done out of necessity during our last hot stretch. Have not seen cooling run as we are now mid 40s. Two stage natural gas and I would imagine that second stage will rarely kick on (just guessing as I havent done a load calc). I didnt have to look into it but when the process was described to me it didnt quite stand up. I think its possible I may have sent him barking up the wrong tree but I figure it cant hurt and he should have been given these figures beforehand.

Ill add that the existing r22 lineset was used from a system that had documented leak issues. Does run through a finished ceiling and not sure whether opening the ceiling was out of the question.

I have to agree with this. I see it all to often where someone gets multiple quotes and takes the lowest offer without understanding why the price was so cheep in comparison to the others. It's easy to walk into a house and tear apart someone else's work but without knowing what limitations they were working with its hard to say if you could have done any better provided the same circumstances. Keep in mind that a business needs to turn a profit and running a company includes overhead costs. In a perfect world everyone would get a gold standard installation but in reality not everyone is willing to or able to afford gold standard. Either way it should have had a proper start up done to it and the work should be completed as to what the purchase agreement details. In short, it's really hard to make judgment on this situation without knowing all the details, scope of work required, conversations had regarding the job, pricing, etc... They may have gotten exactly what they agree to pay for. What does the quality of the install look like? Is it working well?

Absolutely get that, and I dont want to get into total price because it varies by region, but they paid north but it was north of $ with a couple other items tacked on. Also I am not familiar with this company outside of seeing trucks around but believe to have a good reputation and I doubt this would have been the cheapest quote.
