I have a client's cublet (sonic ice style maker) and the motor that runs the gear motor assembly humms, draws excessive amps, and trips the breaker. Sadly the machine is out of warranty for four years now. The part is 2U0147-01 which includes the ENTIRE gear drive assembly. I am able to spin the motor and the gear assembly runs fine. I'm also able take the motor OUT and attempt to run it but it humms and draws excessive amps. All windings give readings. Also, all bearings spin freely. So I believe this is just a problem with the A/C motor.

I called Hoshizaki in hopes of finding information on just getting the motor such as the ohms for the windings. The motor I have doesn't have any specs written on it but I've learned from Hoshizaki that is was made by Kokusan Denkai Ltd and is referred to as manuf part # TC1185. It is a 120V 60 1.45 80W motor. They also told me they do not sell the motor and the part number is for the entire assembly.

A friend of mine is taking the motor to see about getting a price on getting it re-wound. I worry the motor will still hum and not run and this effort will be all for naught. The cost for the new gear drive exceeds the value of this machine and labor will make this higher.

I dislike not being able to fix a machine but the gear box price is excessive and I feel foolish buying an expensive part (the gear drive) when the existing part works. Any thoughts on getting just the motor?

Motor hums but won't spin. I checked the capacitor and re-wired it separately using a test cord just to make sure something else in the wiring wasn't disturbing operation.

Thank you for your thoughts. Yes this is a small machine but it is still satisfying to fix it. To tell someone to buy a new one really limits the value we're able to add as technicians. I take no joy in telling the customer a simple motor has failed and we're not able to replace just the motor but need to buy an expensive component that costs more than the entire used machine is worth. "Here is my bill for my time telling you (in greater detail) what you already know: The machine is broken. You should replace it."

I want to add value to clients and in this case I feel that I'm a sufficient job in just telling them to buy a new machine. Such is the economic reality due to the expensive replacement part. Thanks again for your advice. It gives me more peace knowing I am closer to having exhausted all options for my client.

^ not only that but what else the gear motor took with it. I’ve had gear motors take the auger, evap, and excruting head with it and then your just shy of a new unit.
