We have a split units cooling/ heating our home . We replaced the upstairs 3 ton AC in the attic 2016 and we have been having issues not cooling enough from the start . The contractor replaced the compressor and said all ok last year . Second opinion found minor issues and corrected . Never satisfied as the original unit . I turned the AC on yesterday . Outside temp 83 , set at 72 when the temp was 78 . Four hours later inside temp reached 80 . Unit running inside air not cold enough and outside fan running but blowing colder air not warm . So here we go again
The original contractor is off the hook no installation warranty expired . Should I call them again or try the secant opinion contractor? What a mess...help!

My first question is what exactly failed with the old compressor, and what caused it?
See, compressors are fairly robust. Many times they don’t fail, they are murdered by other problems. Overcharged systems causing liquid slugging, undercharged systems causing compressor overheating, incorrect piping causing poor oil return, bypassed safety controls.......all things that will cause a compressor to fail.

I really don’t know why they replaced the compressor in this fairly new unit . I heard something about they could not purge ?
I can research and go back and ask them if that will help

Has this unit ever worked properly? As in cooled the space, cycled at a reasonable rate, didn’t consume excess energy, isn’t overly loud.

In my opinion no the cycle rate too long and never like the one we replaced .... but both contractors said nothing wrong hmmmmm after they replaced the compressor .. but this is our first turn on this season and it did not cool down after 4 hours temp inside went up by two degrees at 80 inside it’s not an AC

The unit should NOT cycle quickly.
You want extended run times for humidity control. Quick cycling also increases energy use and wear and tear on the unit.

Please clarify , are you saying it’s ok for the AC to run for 4 hours but the actual temperature goes up by 2 degrees not down ? Why? The temperature inside reached 80
Why the air outside the fan comes out cold not warm like the unit next to it ? Should I call for service or wait ?

You need to call for service. Your unit is not running correctly.
The run times should increase with outdoor temperature, until you get to design temperature at which the unit should run constant.

It might, if your house has a huge heat load and you use setback thermostats. That is, if you turn in the AC when you arrive home after work and it hasnt been running all day.

Just off the top of my head, it sounds like you have a heat pump. It sound like it might be running in heat mode. Maybe a wire fell off the reversing valve when the compressor got replaced. Or the thermostat wiring is incorrect.

You need to find a company that knows what they are doing.

What is the temperature split between the supply and return?

It’s not a heat pump... it’s a gas heater
The unit we have a problem with is in the attic and only cool upstairs . Down stairs we have another AC unit . I really don’t understand we lived in the house for 18 years we are the original owners and the older unit we replaced was running fine until it’s end of life . We stayed with carrier as we had the older one same every thing piping and ducts . So why ever since we installed this new one does not run smoothly . We had a secan opinion last summer but nothing came out of it . We just turned the AC on yesterday as it was hot and the issue surfaced in less than 24 hours . I don’t know should I call the original contractor or go with someone new does not even have the history ? I am thinking to go back to the original contractor has the history even thought I lost my confidence . What do you think ?

Since the original contractor has not solved the problem, I would go with someone new. The first guy is missing something. There is no reason that you should have cool air coming out of the condenser fan on an 80 degree day.

Normally, the area being cooled should pull down at about 1 degree an hour, not go up as you have described.

Do you have any friends or neighbors you can get a recommendation from?

Maybe check the last link in my signature below to find a contractor.
