Figured I'd share this with you all...

Dont you love that feeling when you finally nail a problem and fix it when it wont show its face??
I get really worked up and happy when i am able to do that...as i was with this ice machine.
IY0505W-161 500LB capacity water cooled machine, new as of 8 months ago.
For the past 3 months this machine has seriously been a problem child. It kept having random erratic water faults and we couldnt figure it out.

The plumbing to the ice maker was not the best (owner installed it). What would happen is they call saying its slow and the bin is almost empty.
Everytime we get there and its off on a long freeze error and over 200 water faults stored. Of course we check everything, water pressure, flow, etc...reset and run the machine..watch 3 batches maybe 5... making ice fine. No issues.
Tested the thickness probe by reading the Hz on the display and tapping the sensor which responds normally.
Tested the water level probes and both register correctly.
We even downloaded the history on a usb stick and sent it in to mani. They had us replace the water level probe and harness to the board.

Worked ok for a week, but nope still has problems.
After all my coworkers checked it out i get to go out to it again, this being my third time.
I decided No, im gonna park my butt here and figure out what the Hell is wrong with this damn thing!!! LOL.
I get there...same situation, long freeze, water faults stored. Went over the plumbing again thinking "its got to be losing water pressure...or something"
Well....I did one final thing...and that was the relay output test on the control board. It turns All the relays on at once. And....BINGO...
....every other time i would toggle the relays on I would have no water coming in from the inlet valve.
Turned relays on and about the 7th time...all lights on...no water coming in...test for power...NO power at water inlet valve...
Tapped the relays on the board with my screwdriver...boom. theres my power and water starts coming in....BAD BOARD!!!
YES!!!! I was so effing happy to catch this, we all know intermittent problems can suck but just thought Id share with you all. 😁😁

It's so hard to find good help in China nowdays....

In my experience the relays on boards usually don't quit and just go dead. They usually will do a few cycles fine and then quit. Another way of testing relays on boards is to put your finger on them and feel the click and cycle the machine or equipment on and off a few times and if they are defective after a few times they will not click or leave your finger on the relay for a few minutes and feel it coil click back to off. Yes it's a time consuming process that requires a lot of patience but It's worked for me when diagnosing bad boards. Just something I learnt over the years troubleshooting boards. Many a times when relays go bad they tend to be erratic before they completely die off.

I just found a intermittant relay bad couple weeks ago on a board they wanted 350 bucks for, and the boards only 3inches square , im like screw that, yall leave no room for markup !! googled the relay, 5 bucks from a electronic store , got out the solder gun, 5 solder joints, pop old one off, new goes in, baddabing

I only repair for temporary needs, obsolete items or for trusted customers where there will be no backlash if it doesnt last as long as expected. Otherwise, the board you found for 350$ is 700$ to my customer.

If I charged my customer 700 for a little 3 inch board , I'm pretty sure that would be the last time my phone rang from him ....

Losing a customer that doesn't want to pay for the part and the time it took to identify it..

I'm trying to find the downside of that idea.

I'll tell you what replace the board..... and I I'll get you my address..... you can send it to me, and if I can fix it..... it will be a flat fee of $250.

Did you know they are in the process of changing the entire ICE line to the new Elevation line.
No more cube relays, timers or pressure initiated harvest............

All control board.
