so I'm the proud owner of the Bacharach tru pointe us leak detector and the first ive ever had a chance to play with.

I got it and a steel for a hundo with the sound blaster as well and very lightly used.

my first thought is that I can not hear my eyes blink even at very close range and the only noise I pick up that is actually unaudable to me is electronics. I do understand this device has its limitations but I'm curious how it fairs to other US detectors. I have a condenser I'm swapping out tomorrow morning with a very large leak I could not pin point gonna give it a go on the because I'm always amazed when a leak is in the middle of a coil and my h10 was just going nuts so we will see.

any tips or input appreciated :)

If just using by itself does not find it, spray with water only and try again. The water makes a popping sound where as the detector soap will mask the noise.

thanks I will give that a try. that should be no problem on alotta evap coils and I like the fact its so small it will just go in my pocket while I'm doing my usual leak search routine its practicly hassle free

Burford is spot on. The sonic detectors have a bit of trouble finding smaller leaks. I always gave up on the one's I've tried, resorting to a good nitrogen leak test & bubble soap. Most of the time 300+psig, you'll hear the leak before you see it. I don't even own a leak detector, except an old halide torch attachment that works better than anything electronic. I've always had issues, usually the damned thing's beeping away & no leak in the area, or dead silent next to a leak. Just never had luck with them, although a lot of people swear by them.

With my Accutrak some leaks sound like a jet taking off
Some sound like rice crispys or bacon frying.

I can hear my eye lid blink but maybe it's not the kind of sound you were expecting.

There are times when it is rendered useless by other noises

Dishwashing, some lighting and duct noises scream above everything.

A tip would to vary the pressure.

Most big leaks sound like a jet with 10 psi

no my eyes blinking make no noise at all. what kHz does the accutrak pick up? I'm hearing above 4k it audible and this is in the 30k range. I'm just curious and not complaining as I got a pretty sweet deal.

I have a Kent-Moore
Which is a rebranded Accutrak just like your rebranded Bacharach

that's reassuring, maybe I'm just a tough customer. if it finds me really big leaks in a hurry ill be happy. what you think of the in the ear style(ear buds) or should I get the cover the ear bulky style?

do you ever youse the stethoscope style rod? it says in the instructions to use it on a txv.... I seriously doubt I do that but I was thinking if I had service valves bleeding by while trying to pull a vacuum I could hear that.

have you ever tried it on a system in a vacuum?

I use a old set of big KOSS headphones they have been the best that I've had but I haven't bought a set of headphones in over thirty years.

I've been tempted to get a set of noise cancelling ones but haven't yet.

Ear buds would be no good in the field.

so I give it a go today twice. once on a leak search. after finding the leak with my h10 I put the us up to it and it did go to 10 lights on the graph but I could not hear a thing (I could see why big quality head phones would come in handy) secondly I tried it on a large leak in a condenser I knew had existed and it picked it up from pretty far away although would have maybe been hard to pinpoint.

over all ide say this lil guy definatly has its uses although I wouldn't spend a fortune on one.

On mine if it lights up on a 10 or the high point i lower the sensitivity and look again, this will usually help zero in on it or at least narrow it down to a area.

I don't have that style I have used a flexible tube with one.
Mine has a gooseneck and I have put it in contact with things like valves.
Same thing as sticking a screwdriver in your ear ;)
