Amana is part of the Daikin/Goodman family. Some models are basic, others are deluxe. Depends upon which they are proposing so get model #s.

160K 95% furnaces for 2800 sq ft would be fine in northern Canada!
Here are the Amana models
Upstairs:
AMH80804B 80%, 2 stage, multi speed blower, 80K BTU
ASX16036 condenser

Downstairs
AMEC961004CNA 96%, 2 stage, multi speed, 100K BTU
ASX16030 condender.

I had another quote from a Lennox dealer. Here are the models he is suggesting
SLP98UH070XV36 98% modulating furnace
SL280UH070V36 80% modulating furnace
14ACX030 condenser for upstairs

But Lennox is nearly $

The upstairs is a 2 stage that can't be run with a 2 stage stat, only the built in timer. With the standard blower motor, that 16 SEER will not deliver 16 SEER and you won't qualify for the tax credit.

Downstairs, again a HUGE furnace.

are you talking about the Amana, Trane, or Coleman models?

Incorrect. AMEC has timer as well as W2.

so back to my original question, all else being equal, does it make sense paying the extra $1 for trane units? Or extra $to $ for Lennox units?
That's a lot more money for sure. But I'm really worried about the sizing.
Where are you located?

even the quotes from the last guys seem really oversized.

If the equipment is 50 or 100 % oversized, the cost may be 30 to 70% more than necessary. ++ You will have worse performance and less life for the equipment. ... House age?

House is 2800 sq ft. Second floor is slightly less than half that
If the second floor was 1400 sq ft, then he is proposing 1 ton per 350 sq ft. You would end up with a high humidity, and be very uncomfortable. Unless you live in an arid area, like Death Vally.

house is in central NJ. the house was built in 1973, but we're tearing it down to the studs and putting new materials (insulation, siding, roofing, Andersen 200 windows, etc)

thanks for all the advice. I am asking the contractor to do a load calculation. For my own sake, I am trying to do a load calc also at load-calc.net. What do I put for the windows?
