Ah, memories of time spent in a jacket and short pants, defrosting walk ins with a hand held pump sprayer. It's nice when the place has a heated water tap for coffee. Too hot will mess up the o rings in the pump sprayer though. And make sure the drain is clear and not frozen over first. If it's plugged you'll make a mess on the floor and maybe some product.

Hot water 100%
Never catch me with a torch/heat gun again. Haven't used one in years.
My heat gun only touches gaskets now!
In all honesty, it doesn't even need to be scalding hot. Room temp water works better (faster) than a torch. Added benefit of no burnt wires!

All the time lol
I have found that the torch flame sort of bounces off the ice rather than heating it.

The real issue is to solve the icing problem. Placing a solid state sensor, or two, in the fins of the coil for complete defrost sensing and termination may solve a lot of icing in the future and let you get on with less messy jobs.

i bought a heat gun once, and i think i used it once...not even good for reach ins much less a walk in...finally took it out of the truck for good and tossed it in the garage...

Heat guns are good for gaskets, useless for frozen coils!

Are you using water in freezers? I can say for sure the heat gun SUCKS! Alot slower than MAPP gas. I work at a plasma donation center where the freezer is at -32 to -40 degrees! Would the water work there too? Obviously, the freezer is not running, but everything in there is freezing cold. If they can do with out the freezer for a day or night, I've shut it off and put a heater in the box. Next morning all clear.
