I have a Kolpack walk in freezer that is not cooling right. I'm trying to get the temperature down but having problems. So when my gauges are on it my low side is around 5 psi and my high side is 250. I am trying to get it down to a negative 10. As of right now i have 5 psi for 404a which should be around -39 degrees, which I don't want it's around 10 degrees. My defrost timer is set for 4 timeso 6,6,12,12 at two trippers on each. But about the lowest it is getting is around 8-10 give or take. We recently put a new 220 solenoid on it because it was faulty. Just trying to get some ideas. I'm gonna let it sit over night and call first thing in the am to get a temp reading. Any help would be awesome thanks.

Hello

You seem somewhat unfamiliar with refrigeration. Are you a qualified service technician? Perhaps maybe you focus more on residential hvac and aren't used to these systems?

5 psi...is wayyy too low.
What's your ambient? Is the condensing unit outdoors?
You'd want to be shooting for around a 25 suction with a 0F box

Test and figure out why its too low. Drier plugged? Maybe a plugged txv screen or even a failed txv itself

OK so my ambient temp is around 36 degrees. And yes it's on the roof. When I first checked the unit it was at around 33 psi low side with my high side reaching 400 plus psi. At this point it was cycling on and off due to my high pressure. So I recovered some gas. But at that point I found that the solenoid was bad and it wasn't letting any gas through. So I changed it and recovered some gas till my pressure reached 33. OK will test that.

have you added more 404 to get these pressures you currently have ?

The 250 is in the ballpark ,but the certainly 5 isnt

A sight glass is your friend ..... install one

What's the sight glass look like? Is this a headmaster system? Are you a professional refrigeration tech?

ok....like others said...sight glass is your friend. Lets start with making sure you have one.
Classic thing with the LLSV don't let it get to ya everyone's done that at one point.

When you're charging and the glass is bubbly keep going....when its clear and stays clear, stop for now...
Then we can address the low suction if its still an issue

Get a cheap indoor outdoor thermometer like this for like 10 bucks

Take that pigtail , snuggle it next to the big copper pipe as it exits the evaporator inside the walkin box , you know , like shove it between the insulation of pipe, you want to get the temp of that big copper pipe.

If the pipes not insulated , buy some insulation tape , and wrap it around it

( Oh and make sure the TXV bulb is wrapped up good too )

With compressor running , wait about 10 minutes , then check temperature on your new thermometer , and check suction pressure. Report back.

To be honest with you, i work at burger king as a hamburger flipper and I felt like tinkering. Lol I am a service tech with a licensed hvav, electrical, and yes refrigeration company. I am new to the refrigeration side as we're you all at one time. If you want to go electrical then i probably wouldn't be asking questions. am I completely knowledgeable about what is going on no. But that's exactly why I'm here to discuss on a open technicians forum. Am I working with a licensed professional? Yes, but do I want to try and learn while I'm off work yes.... does my boss want me to try and figure out stuff on my own.. yes. so there is my bio for all you negative keyboard warrior's lol. Back to the subject I will try tomorrow checking the super heat and the TXV as well as watching the sight glass that is installed.

Showoff! Most of us never had all that sophisticated equipment when we started out! But if you must you can shove it in our faces, and give us the reading we ask for.

All good man....all these guys on here and have replied on this thread have helped me tons...don't let our Sh8t get to ya..

So...unit is outside...does it have a fan cycle control or a headmaster? If it has a headmaster then there's additional flooding charge u need to add after you've cleared the sight glass

1st like I said....figure out your charge since you added too much

Then...we can address the cause of low suction....superheat will be your friend here. Forget subcooling thats what your sight glass is for
