Hello,

An installer wants to add a sight glass to each TXV - claiming that it "will be useful for diagnostic purposes as well as visually verifying that the TXV is getting a steady stream of Freon"

I've seen these before, but normally on much larger commercial systems - is it common to have a sight glass installed on residential units (3 and 4 ton units) right before the TXV?

He claims it won't restrict anything but I see it being two more connections ready to leak - are these really needed and worth the extra $ cost?

Not worth the extra cost IMO. Subcooling reading will give the same data for diagnostics. Typically not used on residential system. The joints aren't necessarily a concern for leaks as long as they are leak free at install. I have seen the face (glass part) leak many times though, usually when installed outdoors in the weather though.

Well if you even encounter moisture in your system, the sight glass/moisture indicator will be your best friend.

It's worth every penny to be able to see inside those copper lines. Seeing is believing.
It sounds like the installer feels the same, I wasn't interested due to the increased cost and he said he would install them include in the price of the TXV install since he has to open the liquid line anyway.

Can't beat that!

Any recommendations or part numbers for R410A? The tech indicated I could probably get the actual part itself cheaper than he could sell it to me for

Thanks

Is he just removing the pistons and installing the TXV's? if so you might also want to look at getting starts assists added.
