Being lead tech for a bryant master dealer, I regretfully have to say that although I have a bryant 90+ variable speed furnace I refuse to pay the gas company outragous amounts of money. Two weeks ago I put in an add on wood furnace (from united States Stove Company), and My Gas furnace hasn't come on one time.

Well then You can use your lead tech skills to cut wood all summer.

You must have acres of woods at your disposel, I know a few people putting in ourdoor wood furnaces to heat water that is sent indoors to a heat coil.

Haha, that's what I was thinking. I do live on 10 acres of woods but I can make more in a few hours that what I would save by chopping all the wood to burn in that critter.

I thought Keith was lead tech, HA HA HA!

Seriously, knowing the area you work in, I bet you have tons of wood laying around already.

I havent seen any high utility bills like everybody predicted. I put in a 90 plus Rheem for my downstairs & a 80plus Rheem for my upstairs this fall. We have kept our house at 70 all winter & that mod runs almost all the time. the past 2 months were $200 & $220 for our total bill. These bills are the same as last year with my old furnace & gas at a lower rate.

what did it cost for your 2 systems? I'll bet a programable stat would of saved the same amount if progamed correctly.

90% for downstairs? 80% for upstairs, that seems backwards considering the downstairs is more insulated than the upstairs.

I have not yet gone through a tank of fuel oil this winter thanks to a wood burning stove. The way I look at it, the cost of the wood is what I pay for ambience and the heat is free :D

It really is relaxing to sit in front of that fire when it is time for me to shut down.

I dunno, I have an 1800 sq ft 2 storie home with a 72k furnace & 2 zone system I installed, temps got down to around -5 a couple times and my heating bill was $96 and I leave my stat at 70 on both floors.

80% would also mean there is no condensate drain to freeze in the attic during cold winter months
both furnaces sit together in the attic, It never gets cold enough here for the drain to freeze.

You'd lose that bet, because my wife stays home all day so I couldnt set it back. The furnaces werent expensive & besides, its a write off. lol I do have VisionPro 8000 stats but I dont ever program em.

In other words, that maybe be ~80 Therms ($1.20/Therm)
for January '06 with ~870 Heating Degree Days
(exceptionally low for a January this year).

In an effort to approximately rate residential Thermal Envelope/Equipment as 'a system' (Factor), you have the best rating (4.7) of a small survey, if I understand the overall parameters correctly. It appears that this may be a relatively new (< 5 years) home that is VERY well insulated, Tight, and with Good windows.
Is the furnace a new 2-stage VS system?

Simplified Rating
Q = Area * H.D.D. * Factor
Q = 1,800 * 870 * 4.7 = 7,360,200 BTU Output
or 80 Therms Input based on ~92% efficiency.

Thank$ for being Energy conscious.

2hot2coolme, where do you live? I can't imagine a $96 gas bill. We have an ~3,300 sf house, and we will be lucky to keep our heating bills under $400 in a cold month, and that is with a variable speed Infinity furnace, with separate zoning for the living area and for the bedrooms (3 zones total).

I know our insulation is not great, but we don't have a drafty house either. Unfortunately, utilities in the Northeast are painfully high.

one of these days the gas, electric, banks, plumbers, electricians, ac men and all who oppress the poor, widow, hireling of his wages and the fatherless will have to answere to his maker. For he says be not decieved for thiefs, robbers, unclean, selfish, idolitors ( love something more than God is an idol) immoral and so on.
so gas companie you have been told and there is no excuse for anyone.
