A service technician from my company diagnosed a leaking evaporator coil on a geothermal heat pump system a few days ago. Coil was under warranty, we ordered a new one and he charged the system with over 5lbs of R-410A to hopefully get them by until coil arrives and replacement can be made. The customer calls back today, says its not working again. He just called me he arrived and the system is low. customer says it only worked for not even two days. This time its worse he can actually hear the leak and see the oil around the problem spot. He was charging it again, (to get them by for a very short period). I told him he shouldn't even charge it up, and this is the last time until we can make replacement, aside from wasting money and time, I am apologetic for the customer don't get me wrong. But, are there any dangers to the living bodies or any thing in the home with a loss of this amount in such a short time being delivered into the airstream of the living space? I believe they keep fan in ON mode.

No. It can displace oxygen in very large quantities (or if intentionally huffed), but is otherwise nontoxic.

that was a huge waste of good refrigerant. i dare say it's nearly equivalent to an 'intentional discharge'. your tech needs a reprimand.

No danger.

I don't know about on a resi a/c system, but we've come by on a daily basis and added a few pounds to walk-in freezers and the like while we've been waiting for replacement parts that take a few days to get, like evap coils for example.

I guess its up to your customer. If they're willing to pay for a service call and 5lbs of refrigerant every couple days, all the power to them.

I consider that a little different situation. that's a little more important. the h.o. ,if asked, most likely would agree. at least I would like to think so.

Why didn't they just put it in emergency heat?

where did you steal that one from?
so let me get this straight. I can find a smiley anywhere on the net and take it?
google searched 'spank smiley'. took me to some other forum site (sexually related...) and i linked directly to it. though, if you like it a LOT you could save it to your local machine. most images are free for use unless otherwise specified by the image owner.

well sure, eventually, and then out to the great atmosphere of our world to further enhance the greenhouse effect.

If it's billowing refrigerant into the house, forget it. Insist a fix with the assurance of expeditiously working to obtain parts as soon as possible, but decline recharge in the systems present state. If the leaky unit is near open flame appliances, it's a no brainer.

Some customers will "call us back" and then company hop to keep recharging instead of replacing the system or paying hourly to locate leaks. I'll always note in the work order I declined recharge or if the customer declines repair to cover my rear.
